Thornton Book Club

Happy February Book Club Members!

With the holidays long behind us, and six more weeks of winter ahead, February gives us a few things to look forward to: it brings us that much closer to spring, and Valentine’s Day can bring us closer to the ones we love. This month we offer reading recommendations for books that we are sweet on! There’s also news about the newest libraries getting ready to open in Thornton!

Erika B. recommends Penny  by Joyce Meyer and Deborah Bedford. Synopsis: “Jenny Blake has a theory about life: big decisions often don't amount to much, but little decisions sometimes transform everything. Her theory proves true the summer she's 14, when she makes the decision to pick up a penny embedded in asphalt and consequently ends up stopping a robbery, getting a job, and meeting someone who changes her life forever.”

Deb C. is reading The Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. She says it’s” very mysterious and gets your mind rolling. It is hard to put down -- in fact I've made myself put it down so I can get my house cleaned!”  She also recently read Open by Andre Agassi. Deb says “It was interesting to read his thoughts on his life and how he was raised to play tennis.  It never is what it seems from the outside.”

Sharon W. is reading Mercy Rule by John Lescroart. “he’s one of my favorite authors, and it deals with an attorney who has fallen on hard times, but it pulling himself out of it.”

Sheri E. just finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jaime Ford. “It’s a story of a bond of friendship–between a young Chinese boy and a Japanese girl in Seattle in 1942 and their innocent love–that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors.” Sheri thought “it was a great book, well written, and covered a topic of great interest to me, I would highly recommend this book.”

Susan H. is reading Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Greg Mortenson. She also recommends I Don't Know How She Does It: The Life of Kate Reddy, Working Mother by Allison Pearson

Lisa W. is reading The Last Train from Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back by Charles Pellegrino

Bruce W. is reading Everything but the coffee: learning about America from Starbucks by Bryant Simon.

Cathy A. is looking for a book club that meets regularly. Can anyone make a recommendation?

Thornton’s new library getting ready to open

The newest library in Thornton opens Saturday, February 6. The 25,000-square-foot facility is located at 9417 Huron Street, north of 92nd Avenue. The grand opening event’s theme, “A Celebration of Light,” is inspired by the building itself. “One of the most striking features of the building are its windows that allow for natural light to pour through the space and offer incredible views of the Niver Creek Trail, part of the City of Thornton’s Open Space trail system,” says Anythink Libraries Communications Director Steve Hansen.
