Book Club Members - Welcome to January 2012
Happy New Year! We hope 2012 is off to a great start with a great read! Let us know if you got any books for Christmas, or what you’re reading now. Here’s what other book club members are reading:
Member Vi P. says she recently finished Delirium by Lauren Oliver. She says it’s a “story about a society who views love as a disease. If you liked The Hunger Games, you will love this book. I couldn't put it down!”
Book Club member and City of Thornton employee Heather W. is reading and recommending some special books this year, She wants to bring attention to the fact that 2012 is the year of Colorado Water. “It’s a yearlong celebration of water in Colorado,” Heather says. She is currently reading The Big Thirst, The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water by Charles Fishman. “Right away this book changes the way you think about your relationship with water. Facts in the book are sobering, such as one-in-four people on earth do not have easy access to water, or that many young girls around the world cannot attend school, because their daily job is to haul water for their families. Now every time I turn a faucet on to wash my hands, drink a glass of water, make a pot of coffee or flush a toilet -- I humbly appreciate how essential water is to my life.”
Lisa W. is reading Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend by Susan Orlean, and says she continues to read the electronic version of 11/22/63 by Stephen King.
Don L. is reading The Mickey Mantle Story, by Mickey Mantle and Ben Epstein. He says he is a “huge baseball fan,” and was happy to get this book for Christmas.

Thornton's Community Read program kicks off in January, with programming throughout the year at the Thornton Arts & Culture Center, beginning with a community read of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.The entire community is invited to read the book, and then come together Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Thornton Arts & Culture Center, 9209 Dorothy Blvd., for a variety of free programs that explore topics from the book and its historical era. The official kick-off is on January 11. At this event enjoy the sounds of the “After Midnight Jazz Band” and receive a free copy of this year’s chosen book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
From January-April 2012, we will explore the 1930s through performances of the era including big band and swing music, a gospel music and civil rights presentation, comic book and map contests. There will also be eight film screenings with discussions, and an in-depth presentation of the book. The series will end, April 18, with the trial scene from the stage play performed by local volunteer actors.
Community Read is part of a program called Historiography--Storytelling of 20th Century American History, made possible by SCFD, TASHCO, and the Thornton City Council. This program was initiated by the Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council (TASHCO) in an effort to increase reading throughout the City. The Community Read Program is funded through a grant from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) and the City of Thornton.
To volunteer or to participate call Thornton volunteer coordinator and TASHCO Liaison Linda Lowe at 720-977-5881 or email her at linda.lowe@cityofthornton.net. Go to www.cityofthornton.net for a detailed schedule of events.
