Happy June, Club Members!

Hooray, it’s June! That means summer reading; grab a book, sit outside, and enjoy! What are you reading this summer? Here’s what your fellow book club members are reading:

Vi P. has been busy reading a number of books and makes these recommendations:
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. She says it’s “a story of the struggles of a couple of Afghanistan women who eventually cross paths with each other. It's very moving and a must read.” Vi also recommends House Rules by Jody Picoult, “a book about living life in a family with a member that has Asperger's syndrome. It’s very intriguing in learning about the syndrome and hearing a story of how hard it would be to have that.” Finally, she says, Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen is a “very cute adventurous book of a man who is lost and has no life to go back to. It’s a nice easy read and a change from the deeper books I’ve been reading.”

Katharine P. says she has read The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. “It was suggested to me as an audio book by the Tantor Audio sales rep, however I read a paperback copy. It is an excellent story, coming of age and Africa history. I would recommend it highly as well.” She goes on to say, “My reading is intense. I'm on the American Library Association Notable Books Council, and must read up to 15 books per month!  Fiction highlights have been The Informationist by Taylor Stevens, a total adrenaline hit (think Girl with a Dragon Tattoo.) The Fates Will Find Their Way, by Hannah Pittard, about a high school girl who disappears and the boys who imagine what happened to her, and The Weird Sisters, by Eleanor Brown, a Colorado resident

The Atlantic Launches Book Club on Twitter, by Chris O'Shea
The Atlantic is launching a book club – called 1Book140 – that will have discussions about each book on Twitter. 1Book140 is actually the latest form of a social networking based book club that Jeff Howe – an author and professor at Northeastern University – started when he was contributing to Wired. On June 1, anyone who wants to join in the discussion of The Blind Assassin can use the hashtag #1Book140 on Twitter, but the conversation will also carry over on The Atlantic’s website, Tumblr and Facebook. According to Mashable, Howe will also be posting articles on The Atlantic’s website connecting the various conversations.
