Thornton Book Club

Happy Holidays Book Club Members!

Happy Holidays! The holidays can get hectic, so be sure to take some time to read and relax. Thornton Book Club members have a variety of recommendations this month. So, if you’re looking for a book for yourself, or to give as a gift, there’s a lot to choose from. If you want to find a ‘sit-down’ book club in your area to attend check out www.anythinklibraries.org

Be sure to e-mail us at thorntonbookclub@cityofthornton.net and tell us what you’re reading, so other members can make the most of the great books out there in the coming new year!

What members are reading:

Dave J. is reading The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. It’s a modern day vampire tale and Dave says “Not many stories scare me, but this one made me get up and do a security check around the house.” Sounds like a great read for these long winter nights.

Linda V. recommends The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. She says it’s very well written and is a Diary of Anne Frank” type of read with a “nice ending, to a very horrible epic in our lives.” Linda also recommends 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett, and wonders if anyone has read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford.

Lisa W. is reading The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. She says this is a “clever, lively book with a fun, fabulous 11-year old heroine who takes us on a field trip full of intrigue and murder.”

Books for Grownups

You better not cry: Stories for Christmas by Augusten Burroughs. Kirkus Reviews says “'The high priest of mortifying disaster serves up a fine selection of cringe-inducing yuletide fiascos.”

A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster by Rebecca Solnit made Dwight Garner’s list of Top 10 Books of 2009. Garner says the book is “an offbeat investigation of an offbeat emotion: the fleeting, purposeful joy that fills human beings in the face of disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes and even terrorist attacks.”

The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes tops Janet Maslin’s list of the Best of 2009. She says it’s a “ wealth of information, this author chronicles the eureka-moment adventurousness of scientific progress during the Romantic era. “
